The Importance of Slowing Down: Mindfulness Tips for Teachers

Teaching is a tough job. You likely find yourself running around constantly, with no time to take a sip of water or drink that cup of tea you made hours ago. It’s easier said than done, but taking care of yourself is crucial to avoid burnout. Making time each day to slow down is essential, especially when your mind is busy all day.

I’ve really had to teach myself to slow down, inspired by Fearne Cotton’s Happy Place podcast. She mentioned something along the lines of, “When does anyone ever tell us to take our time with something?” We are rarely told to do things slowly. Slowing down requires a conscious effort, and one effective way to do that is through practicing mindfulness.

Here are some ideas for being mindful:

  • Yoga: A great way to stretch and calm both body and mind.
  • Walking: A simple, refreshing activity that helps clear your mind.
  • Exercise of any kind: Physical activity releases endorphins, reducing stress.
  • Pilates: Focuses on core strength and controlled movements.
  • Meditation: Helps in calming your thoughts and finding inner peace.
  • Knitting: A rhythmic and soothing activity that can be very meditative.

One particularly enjoyable mindfulness activity is colouring. We have created 10 free printable colouring pages designed especially for teachers, featuring quotes to make you laugh. These pages are perfect for taking a moment to yourself, letting your creativity flow, and enjoying a break from the daily hustle. We recommend colouring these and blending with a brush pen, such as these. SO satisfying!

Additionally, did you know you can download the meditation app Smiling Mind for free? This app includes a range of guided meditations for both adults and children, so you could even share this experience with your class or your own children. Check it out here.

Remember, taking care of yourself isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. Slow down, be mindful, and make time for activities that bring you joy and relaxation.
